Our go-to guide for washing your winter woollies

Who doesn’t love the snuggly feeling of wool in winter? This natural fibre breathes naturally, and if well cared for, will last a long time. Washing at home is actually better for wool knits than dry cleaning, as the harsh chemicals used can damage the fabric over time. 

Your wool garments should be washed on a gentle, cool setting (check your machine for a wool cycle, cold water wash or delicate cycle). Follow the below steps for a fail-safe way to safely clean and freshen up your woollens this winter. 

Steps:

1. PRE-TREAT:To prevent shrinking, soak any wool items in cold to lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes before washing. You can gently spot treat for any stains at the same time. Save water by using the same water to hand wash them, or tipping it into the washing machine as it fills up. 
2. SEPARATE: If machine washing, always keep wool items separate from any of your regular items (especially any zips or buttons).To prevent pilling, wash your wool garments (including socks!) inside out. This helps to protect them from any agitation or friction during the washing process.
3. WASH: OurLaundry Detergent Strips love wool and delicates! Simply drop one into your hand washing tub or directly into the washing machine. Never use bleach or fabric softener with your woollies, as these products destroy the wool fibres and reduce their ability to regulate body temperature.
4. DRY: Allow to air dry naturally to further extend the life of your wool clothes and reduce your environmental impact. Hang out in the sun if possible to take advantage of sunlight’s natural antibacterial properties. Always flat dry wool jumpers and knitwear, as line drying on hangers can cause them to stretch and lose their shape. Even if you find you need to squeeze out more water, always keep the tumble dry setting to low.
